Finding Ourselves in the Story: A Study of the Gospel of Mark (Rm. 112)

The 2012 lectionary stories from Mark’s gospel are familiar to most of us. Yet, just when we think we have it all figured out, something new challenges us. We hear our own voice mingled with those of the disciples around the table who ask Jesus, “Is it I?” We read about a woman anointing Jesus with oil and wonder what extravagant gifts we give because we love God. Each time we encounter this Gospel, Christ confronts us with the opportunity to find a path forever new to us and follow him on it. This group is led by Fred Lewis.  An optional study guide will be available for purchase.

A New Way to Love: Living God’s Purpose for Your Marriage (Parlor)

This study lifts up the Biblical message of love and teaches a step-by-step process to grow that love into our lives. You will learn how to align yourself with God’s purpose for marriage, and to create a life of joy with your spouse.  Harville Hendrix, originator of the Imago approach to couples work, authored this study with his wife, Kelly Hunt.  Dr. Hendrix, a guest on Oprah!, is the author of “Getting the Love You Want.” Participant manuals may be purchased.  Leaders for the group are marriage and family therapy students from Christian Theological Seminary, supervised by Suzanne Coyle.

Faith Expressed through the Movies (Room 110)

The movies that are shown each and every day in our movie houses reveal the culture in which you and I live.  Viewing these movies gives us a chance to not only see evidence of our culture, but the opportunity to reflect upon and critique it.  Here at First Baptist we have used movies as a tool with which to examine the culture.  We capture insights.  We formulate faith positions. We grow in our ability to understand and live in our culture.  A movie will be selected for each week during Lent.  If you want to participate, then you will need to secure that movie, view it, and come on Wednesday evenings prepared to discuss and talk about the film.  This group is led by Gene Ton.
