Reflection on LGBTQ Education Workshops

By Mark Fakhoury

On Saturday, September 26, I participated in the first LGBTQ+ education session: Sexual Orientation 101. There was lots of important information shared. One of the things I found most helpful was that David Howser explained a lot of the terminology used. It makes me realize just how diverse the LGBTQ+ community is. It’s helpful to know so that I can interact with people in this community in a more meaningful way.

I know that many people feel judged and outcast by churches and turn away from God because they don’t want to be a part of such a judgmental group. I’m glad that First Baptist is exploring ways to make people in our community truly know that they can “come as you are”. I personally want to make sure ALL people feel welcome at our church. I don’t want to make assumptions due to my ignorance that could be hurtful to others.

Sometimes we just need to get to know people and to be able to learn to love and accept them. This topic may feel uncomfortable for some of us, but this is a great way to learn and grow in our understanding so that we can really show the love of Christ to everyone. I encourage anyone to participate in the upcoming sessions. I think they are very worthwhile.
